Adventure as Mission
& Training
Our teams in North Africa and the UK are using adventure as mission to make disciples and train others for ministry.
Whether it's sailing, hiking, or mountaineering, many of the fields we work in have amazing landscapes. Outdoor adventure businesses are a great way to engage with the community and form relationships in both urban and more remote areas.
Teams on the field are successfully using adventure as a platform for mission, while our UK sending base has developed a training program designed to equip participants to use adventure for ministry.
If you're interested in joining a team using adventure for mission, send us an email at usinfo@worldhorizonsusa.org. Read more about the adventure as mission training below.
Training and Preparation
Use your existing experience and develop new skills to serve on our Adventure Training in Wales.
Starting in September, you’ll receive eight weeks of training and preparation at our Centre for the Nations in Llanelli, followed by adventure placements in the UK and around the world. These placements can vary depending on your availability, from four to eight months.
We accept people who are over the age of 18 onto our Adventure Training programme. There are opportunities for individuals and couples to come and participate in this course; the programme is for those both with or without previous experience in outdoor pursuits and adventurous activities. We believe God has put a heart of adventure inside everyone – join us as we seek to use that passion in a way that glorifies Him!
The first eight weeks of training seeks to encourage personal development and build on your previous experience in outdoor pursuits. Our location gives us access to many wild and beautiful places in South Wales; we are within an hour’s drive of the Brecon Beacons and the Gower Peninsular. You will develop your skills in areas such as kayaking, climbing and mountaineering. Grow in your ability to prepare and run activities for adventure camps and church youth groups. You will gain an understanding of the practical administration that is required to work in the outdoor industry in the UK as well as develop your leadership skills.
The training will take place at our Centre for the Nations in Llanelli, South Wales; you will live alongside other trainees preparing for mission. During this time, you will receive valuable teaching on subjects such as working in a cross-cultural context, understanding team dynamics and applying Biblical principles. These engaging lectures are delivered by our mission workers who have many years of experience.
Step out of your comfort zone, go on new adventures and embrace God’s potential for your life! We hope that through this course you’ll have many opportunities to grow in your faith and develop a deeper relationship with God.
After your training, you'll get to do an international placement to put what you've learned into practice.
Adventure placements commence in mid-November. You’ll primarily be working with our Navigate team, based in Llanelli, who run adventurous activities and youth camps for UK churches. During your placements you will live in rented accommodation or lodgings. You will also go to serve on adventure placements in the UK and overseas.
We aim to tailor adventure placements for the individual according to their experience and interests. Once we have agreed with you upon a potential placement, you will go through an interview process to assess your suitability and involvement. We can arrange adventure placements in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. You could be involved in mountaineering in the Atlas Mountains, help run team-building events in the Middle East or serve at an outdoor centre in Scotland. Our hope is that the Adventure Training programme will be a good foundation from which you can continue to use the outdoors as a context for mission.
